Rain may be in the forecast for tomorrow, but the weather is looking great for a weekend along the coast. In fact, there are several fun and free things to do in Marina Del Rey this weekend.
Starting at 9:30am this Saturday (the 9th), dog lovers (and their furry friends, of course!) can attend a free “Biscuits, Barks, and Brews” mixer at Oberrieder Dog Park. The mixer is being put on by Doggie Central and Playa Vista, and will include coffee and bagels for the human attendees and doggie treats for their four-legged companions. It’s a great way to let your dogs run and play with others, while you get to enjoy a beautiful Marina Del Rey morning with other “dog people”.
Next, be sure to visit the Ballona Wetlands. On the second and forth Saturday of each month (this Saturday being the 2nd of the month), visitors are welcomed to stop by for an informative and free tour of the wetland’s Freshwater Marsh. The tour features a variety of native birds and plants, and teaches guests how the freshwater system works. The program runs from 10am to 11am.
If you can’t make it to Ballona Wetlands on Saturday, don’t worry! On the second Sunday of the month (Yep, you guessed it – this Sunday, the 10th is the 2nd Sunday of the month) the wetlands also hosts a free nature tour of its salt marsh and dunes. This tour introduces visitors to Marina Del Rey’s local coastal ecosystem. The guided program runs from 10am to 11am, but if you prefer, you can also embark on a self-guided tour from 2pm to 4pm. You’ll be free to walk the trails around the salt water marsh and dunes, with docents available to provide additional information at specific sights.
Once you’re done exploring the wetlands, be sure to get down to Marina Del Rey’s Fisherman’s Village for the free weekend concert (near the lighthouse). On Saturday, the concert runs from 1pm to 4pm and features R&B band “Blue Breeze“. Sunday’s concert is during the same timeframe but will showcase the Bossa Nova/Samba musical stylings of “Brazil Brasil”.
Not sure how to get to Marina Del Rey? Well, just remember Kristen Wigg’s character’s shortcut from the SNL skit, “The Californians”:
“Stewart look at me. You can do this. I know a shortcut through El Segundo. Take the 105 West and exit on Culver. When you see the Zankou Chicken on the left. Turn left. Take Venice and take it all the way down. Then you’re in Marina del Rey.”
