Attention all comic book nerds:
Prepare thyself for for the L.A. Comic Book and Science Fiction Convention! The self-proclaimed “One Day Super Show” will take place on February 24th at the Shrine Auditorium and Exposition Center, located just north of the USC campus.
I, for one, am a huge sucker for conventions. Sure, nothing can ever compare to the nerd mecca, ComicCon, but us broke geeks gotta get our kicks, too! So I did a little digging from for a cheap con and here’s what I came up with: this little baby requires only a $10 investment for a day of fun, the opportunity to check out awesome art and merchandise, and the chance to rub elbows with some very cool people. Plus, it gives you an excuse to get your CosPlay on!
So who’s going to be at this little shindig? The main attraction will feature two stars from the hit A&E Series “The Walking Dead” which is based off of the (in my humble opinion) fabulous comic by Robert Kirkman. Both Laurie Holden (super sniper, Andrea) and Danai Gurira (tough-as-nails sword wielder, Michonne) will be hanging out at the con from 12pm – 3pm. Autographs from the girls require an extra fee ($30), but you get your choice of picture. You can also pose with them for a picture on your own camera for $10, or just say, “hi” and gush about how much you love them for free.
In addition to the girls, you can shake hands with Glen Brunswick & Whilce Portacio (author and artist for the comic series “Non-Humans”, respectively) and get free autographs from 11am – 3pm. Ray Park will also be at the event. You may know him as Snake Eyes from “G.I. Joe: Retaliation”, as Darth Maul from “Episode 1” or as The Toad from “X-Men”. Plus, meet Edward Furlong (“Terminator 2”, “The Crow”, “Detroit Rock City”), and others!
And don’t forget to visit the dealer’s room which will feature a number of collectables and other merchandise for sale like comic books, original art, action figures, trading cards, clothing, etc. Honestly, checking out the dealer’s tables is usually my favorite part of any con. You can almost always score some really incredible deals on cool stuff for yourself or to give to friends as gifts. Plus it gives you the opportunity to look over the works of up-and-coming or aspiring artists that you would have never learned about otherwise and lend them your support. Us broke artists have to stick together, right?!
The L.A. Comic Book and Science Fiction Convention will run from 10am – 5pm on the 24th. Directions and parking information for the event can be found here. All tickets will be sold at the box office on the day of the event.
Now go start practicing putting on your zombie makeup and doing your best “un-dead” limp!
